If your water supply bill is more than £40 per month you may have a leak on your supply pipe. Not only is this a waste of money it is also a waste of water, a precious resource in this day and age.
If left untreated, a leak can cause damage to your own property and that of your neighbours.
Section 73 of the Water Industry Act 1991, states that it is an offence under law, for the owner or occupier of any premises to intentionally, or negligently, waste water.
If you have a leak, your local water authority can serve notice on you under section 75 of the Water Industry Act 1991, and if the leak is not fixed within six weeks of their notification, enter your property and make the repair themselves. They will then charge you the full cost of repair plus any associated costs.
If you are the owner of the property, YOU are responsible for the maintenance of all internal and external pipe work and any leaks within the boundary of your property. This is NOT the responsibility of your local water authority as many people think.
The Water Corporation is an independent organisation set up to raise awareness of water supply issues affecting properties within the UK. We provide advice and assistance to help homeowners, tenants and landlords, improve, repair, maintain and update their water supply systems.
